If you’ve been avoiding going on a low carb diet for fear that it’s going to be too restrictive, you’re far from alone! That said, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had after removing the likes of bread, pasta, and sweets from your life.
All you really need to do to fight off any cravings is look around the grocery store for alternatives. To help you get started, here are some of the easiest low carb snack ideas:
1 – The Chip Aisle Isn’t All Off-Limits
One of the first things to go when you start a low carb diet is virtually all manner of snack chips. You’ll even have to say goodbye to popcorn! However, the chip aisle still has a few items that are worth picking up.
First off, you should give pork rinds a try. While they can be a lot more expensive per ounce than you may be used to, they’re very filling and often available in a wide variety of flavors. Everything between barbecue to “hot and spicy” should be covered. Best of all, they generally have zero net carbs!
You can find various types of nuts on the same aisle much of the time. You should be able to have a handful or two of natural almonds and maybe even a few peanuts or cashews each day to help tide you over between meals. They’re also very filling, and almonds have been said to help energize you and even stave off headaches!
2 – Keeping It Sweet
If you’ve found that you miss candy, cakes, pies, and ice cream, you can sate your sweet tooth a bit with sugar free Jell-O. It’s affordable, easy to make, and you can even find it already packaged much of the time. This is the one exception to the rule of staying away from “sugar free” items however; a lot of the sugar free candy on the market generally has substitutes that can be every bit as unhealthy as the carbs they’re aiming to replace.
If you can control yourself, dark chocolate also has some of the lowest carb values of anything else you’ll find in the candy section. You can have some in the strictest moderation possible; a little piece here and there should easily work within the confines of most low carb meal plans.
3 – Oh-So Savory
Finally, savory snacks are going to be your go-to. A handful of cheese cubes, pepperoni slices, and select styles of beef jerky can work wonders for curing your munchies. If you can afford to invest in higher quality, more expensive brands or selections hand-prepared from your deli, you’ll be even more likely to avoid any sort of unhealthy added ingredients.
That covers the basics of what you can accomplish with a cursory run through your favorite grocery store. From there, you should be able to come up with low carb snack ideas of your own if you just experiment a bit. As long as you remain open and committed, low carb dieting can be far easier than most will tell you.
